About SWABC

Southwest Association of Bank Counsel was originally formed in July of 1976 as the Texas Association of Bank Counsel to inform and educate Texas lawyers who devote a substantial part of their professional time to representing banks and other financial institutions. In 2017, TABC became the Southwest Association of Bank Counsel, opening its membership to lawyers in Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, and New Mexico who represent financial institutions.

SWABC is an invaluable resource for its members. SWABC promotes networking among bank lawyers and encourages the exchange of information on transactional techniques and developments in the law. SWABC also provides members an opportunity to convene at the annual convention to earn CLE credit hours and network. Additional CLE opportunities are available to SWABC members throughout the year.

Relationship with TBA

SWABC is a separate and independent association that has long enjoyed — and continues to enjoy — a strong working relationship with the Texas Bankers Association. The General Counsel of TBA currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer.

The Texas Bankers Association staff provides management services to SWABC, including membership support, database management and administrative and event support services. SWABC members also enjoy TBA member benefits and receive timely news releases and can request access to TBA online subscriptions and publications. These materials are particularly helpful to SWABC members during legislative sessions.

Relationship with Texas Tech School of Law

SWABC also enjoys a longstanding relationship with the Texas Tech University School of Law. SWABC’s monthly publication, The Texas Bank Lawyer, contains the latest opinions concerning UCC, bankruptcy, consumer and general banking issues and is available exclusively to SWABC members. There is no doubt that receipt of The Texas Bank Lawyer is one of the more attractive benefits of SWABC membership. The Texas Bank Lawyer is published through the efforts of the Texas Tech University School of Law students and its editor, Professor Sally Henry. Professor Henry also serves on the SWABC Board of Directors as an Advisory Director.

The Texas Tech University School of Law has made significant commitments to informing and educating SWABC members in the field of banking law. SWABC is proud to award Annual Scholarships to Texas Tech University School of Law students.

If you would like more information about the Annual Texas Tech University School of Law Scholarship or SWABC’s relationship with the Texas Tech University School of Law, please contact Professor Sally Henry at (806) 834-2417.
