Survey: More than one in three Americans fell victim to fraud in past year

3/06/2025

According to the latest Bankrate Financial Fraud Survey, more than one in three Americans fell victim to a fraudulent scam in the past year, surveying from January 2024 to January 2025. Of those affected, nearly 2 in 5 Americans, or 37%, suffered financial losses.

Among those surveyed, slightly more Americans are doubtful (39%) than confident (37%) about facing a financial scam in the coming year. However, individuals who have been victims of past scams feel more vulnerable, with 46% expecting to be targeted again, compared to 36% who believe it’s unlikely to happen.

Baby boomers and Gen X were the most targeted by financial scams, but Gen Z and millennials faced higher losses—50% and 45%, respectively, compared to 32% of Gen X and 26% of boomers. Those earning $50,000 or less annually were the most likely to experience fraud.
