Statement on Rodney Hood as acting OCC head

2/07/2025

(AUSTIN) – The Texas Bankers Association (TBA) released the following statement on today’s announcement by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent his intention to appoint former NCUA Chairman Rodney Bessent as a Deputy Comptroller and to designate him the First Deputy Comptroller of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). In this role, Mr. Hood will also serve as Acting Comptroller of the Currency.

Chris Furlow, TBA CEO and President said, “The Texas Bankers Association congratulates Rodney Hood on his designation to be the Acting Comptroller of the Currency.

We respect the critical role the OCC plays in protecting the banking system. It requires a balance of necessary regulatory frameworks with a sensible supervisory approach that enables banks—especially community banks—to serve families, small businesses, and local economies.

For too long banks have been subject to Inside-the-Beltway bureaucratic demands that are ideologically driven. Under Mr. Hood’s leadership, the OCC has an opportunity to return to its statutory mission. Mr. Hood is an experienced regulator and our banks look forward to working with him to see supervisory policy focus on common-sense safety and soundness rather than political and climate agendas.”
